If the drain were to become clogged water would overflow out of the air gap and into the cabinet damaging the floorboards. An air gap fitting is a safety device mounted on your sink or countertop through which the dishwasher hose passes on its way to the drain. A dishwasher s drain line connects to the kitchen sink s drain system either by the drainpipe or the garbage disposal if one is installed. The drain hose starts at the bottom of the dishwasher and loops up to a higher point than the kitchen sink drain and then comes down to connect to either the kitchen sink drain or the garbage disposal. A problem with the air gap can cause the dishwasher not to drain at all or it can cause water to leak into the sink or onto the countertop. It provides a pressure break in the drain line that prevents the possibility of dirty drain water being back siphoned into a dishwasher filled with clean dishes thereby contaminating them. Waste water from the sink s drain that flows into the dishwasher creates a potential health hazard making finding the cause of the problem something you should not put off.
